As we stand just days away from the first full deliberations of the term of the 2024-2028 Milwaukee Common Council, I want to say THANK YOU to my colleagues for electing me in overwhelming fashion to continue serving as Common Council President. The trust you have placed in me is something that I consider sacred, and it means the world to me to have the privilege of leading this esteemed and dynamic group of elected Council members.

In 2022, when I was elected as Milwaukee’s first Latino Common Council president, I made a promise that we would meet our challenges head-on, and that we would work together to make ALL of Milwaukee stronger and better. I believe we have stayed the course and have worked to do just that; but our job is not done, and together we must roll up our sleeves and continue to bring improvements and positive movements to our great city and its people.

I have been buoyed by the palpable new energy of our newly-elected members: They are ready to make a difference and to join the fight! I am looking forward with an optimistic mindset at all of the possible great accomplishments that I believe lie ahead.

This Council is the most diverse in Milwaukee history, and the members personify diverse representation. The members of the Council better reflect who we truly are as a city, and the knowledge and lived experience of the Council members will give voice to tens of thousands of Milwaukeeans who for years may have not felt represented by people who don’t look like them.

I am humbled to be the leader of such an engaged and determined body, and I am excited and ready to make sure the people’s work always gets done the right way.
