Senator Hesselbein Applauds Governor Evers’ Veto of Hateful, Anti-LGBTQ+ Proposal

MADISON – Today, Governor Tony Evers vetoed Assembly Bill 377, which would have banned transgender students from playing on sports teams that are consistent with their gender identity. State Senator Dianne Hesselbein (D-Middleton) applauded Governor Evers’ veto of this hateful proposal.

“I am proud that Governor Evers vetoed this legislation and vows to veto any proposal that harms LGBTQ+ youth in Wisconsin. Rather than address the real issues facing Wisconsinites, Republicans instead chose to wage a culture war against an already marginalized group of children.”

The Trevor Project reported that 85% of transgender and nonbinary youth recently surveyed said that debates around anti-trans bills have negatively impacted their mental health.

“Republican efforts to ban students from playing sports with their friends are deeply misguided and are detrimental to the health of trans youth.

“I believe that we should lead with kindness, not hate, in Wisconsin.”
