Senator Habush Sinykin Condemns Antisemitic Attack in Australia and Underscores Urgent Need for Legislative Action in Wisconsin
MADISON, WI – Earlier today, at a public Hanukkah celebration in Sydney, Australia, at least 15 people, ranging in age from 10 to 87, were shot and killed during an antisemitic mass shooting, with dozens more critically injured.
Senator Habush Sinykin released the following statement regarding the incident:
“Every person deserves the freedom to worship and gather in community without the fear of violence. My heartfelt condolences go out to all the victims, their families, and the Jewish community in Sydney and across the world, who came together to celebrate the beginning of Hanukkah.
“The increasing frequency of antisemitic occurrences around the world, including here in Wisconsin, demand immediate action to keep our state’s faith communities safe. We have an opportunity in Wisconsin to take legislative action and move forward on a bipartisan bill I introduced in November, which creates a Nonprofit Security Grant Program. This bill would allow religious organizations in Wisconsin to apply for security grants as needed to ensure safe places of worship and community in the face of ongoing threats.
“In Wisconsin, we must stand united against all forms of hate, including antisemitism, and work to ensure that no one, regardless of religion or creed, endures persecution or the tragic loss of life like that experienced in Sydney.”
