Senator Drake and Milwaukee Residents Call Out State Legislature for Failing to Keep Milwaukee Streets Safe
MADISON- Today Senator Dora Drake was joined by Milwaukee Vision Zero advocates for a press conference on the legislature’s failure to keep Milwaukee streets safe from reckless driving incidents by failing to advance Senate Bill 375 despite public outcry from victims and Milwaukee residents.
The Wisconsin State Assembly and Senate have adjourned the 2025-26 Legislative Session, leaving critical public safety legislation unfinished. Among the most significant measures left on the table is the Safe Roads Save Lives Act (SB 375), a bipartisan bill aimed at reducing dangerous driving and saving lives in Milwaukee.
The Safe Roads Save Lives Act would allow Milwaukee to implement a traffic safety camera program to target reckless drivers speeding more than 15 mph over the limit or running red lights. Speed is the leading factor in traffic fatalities and severe injuries, and similar camera programs in other major cities have reduced crashes by up to 54% and injury crashes by up to 47%.
“Milwaukee families deserve safe streets,” said Senator Drake. “The Safe Roads Save Lives Act is a community driven, evidence-based solution to reduce crashes and save lives. It’s disappointing that the majority chose to adjourn rather than take action on this bi-partisan life-saving bill.”
This bill also received a public hearing in Milwaukee with strong community backing, and co-sponsorship from a majority of the Senate Transportation and Local Government Committee members.
