Senator Agard Backs Restore Roe Legislation Introduced by Democratic Colleagues
MADISON – Today, Senate Democratic Leader, Senator Melissa Agard (D-Madison) stood alongside Governor Evers, Attorney General Josh Kaul, legislative Democrats, and health care professionals as Senator Kelda Roys and Representative Lisa Subeck introduced legislation to repeal the state’s 1849 criminal abortion ban and restore Roe. Senator Melissa Agard released the following statement:
“Since Roe was overturned last June, abortion has become unavailable in Wisconsin due to the uncertainty around harsh statutory language enacted in 1849 that criminalizes all abortion care. While Attorney General Josh Kaul has filed a lawsuit challenging the validity of the pre-Civil War ban, the State Legislature must take immediate action to restore Roe, empower medical professionals, and honor the reproductive health care decisions made by women.
“Simply put, when abortion is inaccessible, women die and our state is less safe. I will not stop working until safe, legal abortion is restored in our state and Wisconsin Democrats will not rest until pregnant people’s rights are once again respected. We know that the people of Wisconsin stand on the right side of history in support of access to reproductive health care. Period.”
