Seeing the Writing On The Wall, Sen. Hutton Retires To Avoid Defeat

MADISON, WI – Today State Senator Rob Hutton (SD-5) announced he is retiring from the legislature at the end of his current term and will not seek reelection in 2026. The announcement comes just days after the news that Robyn Vining outraised him by over $90,000 last year and the State Senate Democratic Committee outraised the Committee to Elect a Republican Senate by more than 2:1. It’s clear Sen. Hutton saw the writing on the wall of an incoming Democratic majority, the remaining question is, is Senator Van Wanggaard next?

SSDC Communications Director Will Karcz on Senator Hutton announcing his retirement:

“Senator Hutton recognizes what Wisconsin Republicans have been trying so hard to ignore; 2026 is the year Democrats are going to win a majority in the State Senate. It’s clear Sen. Hutton wanted to avoid the embarrassment of defeat and we don’t blame him. Robyn Vining will make an exceptional State Senator for the 5th district and the people of the district will be well served by Hutton’s retirement.”
