Rotary Club of Milwaukee Lights the Hoan Bridge to Celebrate World Polio Day

By - Oct 24th, 2024 01:32 pm

Tonight, the Rotary Club of Milwaukee and other local Rotary clubs, in conjunction with the Hoan Group, will light up the Hoan Bridge in purple to celebrate Rotary International’s 39th World Polio Day.

Why Purple?

World Polio Day, which is on October 24th every year, is also sometimes referred to as “Purple Pinkie Day”. This is because during National Immunization Days kids have their pinkies marked with purple ink that lasts for 30 days, to ensure they are not vaccinated more than once. World Polio Day is a time for Rotary members, public health advocates, and all who want a world free from polio to come together, recognize our progress in the fight to end polio, and talk about the actions we need to take in order to end polio for good

Starting at 5:00 pm, a viewing party will be held at the Milwaukee Sail Loft in the Third Ward. At dusk, the bridge will be lit up in purple lights.
