Resolution renaming Cawker Park adopted by Common Council
New park name will recognize Milwaukee native Al Jarreau
The Common Council during yesterday’s meeting (Monday, July 31) adopted file #230388 – a resolution relating to the renaming of the 30th and Cawker Park Area located at 2929 N. 30th St. as Alwin Lopez (Al) Jarreau Park. The file was adopted with unanimous co-sponsorship from all Council members.
Al Jarreau was a prominent jazz artist and Milwaukee native who was known for his innovative vocal style and the positive messages he put in his lyrics. Over the course of his career, he won six Grammy Awards, received nearly 20 nominations, and became known as one of the finest artists of his time in genres ranging from R&B and jazz to contemporary and pop. Alderman Khalif J. Rainey, who represents the 7th Aldermanic District where the park resides and sponsored the file, brought forth the renaming effort to raise public awareness about Al Jarreau’s Milwaukee origins and to celebrate his highly influential career and talent.“Al Jarreau was a brilliant and extremely influential artist in the genres of jazz and R&B, but so many Milwaukee residents are unaware of how important this city was to him, or that he even came from Milwaukee. That’s why I’m glad that this renaming file was adopted and we can honor a man who made great strides with his music and always cherished his home city. I hope that this will promote his legacy and provide an example for our children to aspire to,” said Alderman Rainey.
