Representative LaKeshia Myers Condemns Assembly Republican’s Political Gamesmanship with COVID-19 Legislation
MADISON – Representative LaKeshia Myers (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement regarding the amendments made by Republicans to Assembly Bill 1 relating to state government actions to address the COVID-19 pandemic:
“Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly took up the bipartisan compromise version of AB1, which received overwhelming support in the State Senate and which Governor Evers indicated he would sign. Instead of sending the bill to Gov. Evers’ desk for immediate action, Assembly Republicans voted to amend the bill by adding measures that seek to divide and further debilitate Wisconsinites. The political theater on display today was done for no other purpose than to allow the Assembly Speaker an opportunity to ‘one-up’ the Senate Majority Leader; and while he was busy flexing his political muscle, the lives of Wisconsin residents are hanging in the balance.”
Myers also said, “for 286 days, our government lie dormant; with Republican leadership refusing to meet or confer on any substantive legislation that would help the people of Wisconsin. But when a solid, bipartisan bill was put forth and agreed to by their senate colleagues, the Assembly Republicans did not act in the best interest of the people, they instead chose to follow their pied piper, leaving the people of Wisconsin in peril.”
