Rep. Zamarripa on DACA Supreme Court Decision

Milwaukee—Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa (D-Milwaukee) released the following statement on the U.S. Supreme Court blocking the Trump Administration from ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“Today, nearly 7,000 Wisconsin DACA recipients can rest a little easier as the Supreme Court put an end to the President’s unconstitutional war on the DACA program. These are folks who were brought to the United States through no fault of their own, have studied in our universities, served in America’s armed forces, and worked hard as employed adults.

“Despite the positive contributions to our state and nation, DACA Dreamers have lived in fear for the last three years. The Trump administration has targeted this program as part of a bigoted and xenophobic political strategy to vilify all immigrants. Today is a victory for DACA recipients and for our country.

“Of course, while any victory for immigrant rights should be celebrated, we can and must do more. We will continue the fight for comprehensive immigration reform. We must fight for a country where undocumented immigrants don’t have to live in constant fear, and we will not stop until there is a meaningful pathway to citizenship. This far from over.”

Rep. Zamarripa also wanted to include a quote from a DACA educator who works at a school in the 8^th Assembly District. Alondra Garcia is a second grade bilingual teacher at Allen-Field Elementary School:

“It brings me so much joy to know that DACA is here to stay, and I can continue living my life in Milwaukee as an educator,” said Garcia. “I can fight alongside my peers because Black Lives Matter, period. I want to be a voice for the black and brown students in my school and community, so for me, DACA means I can continue being vocal and proactive.”
