Rep. Stubbs Statement On Special Session Request From Gov. Evers
Wisconsin’s GOP-controlled legislature quickly adjourned the special session called for by Gov. Tony Evers this Wednesday. Representative Stubbs issued the following statement:
It is unfortunate that Gov. Evers’ call special session was adjourned so quickly by Republicans, especially due to the lack of necessary funding for child care, the mental health crisis, and the UW System in the finalized 2023-25 Biennial Budget. By continuously ignoring the call for special session, Republicans are actively choosing not to take action and are failing to advocate for Wisconsin’s children.
The exclusion of funding to these matters will only be harmful, as child care facilities close down due to lack of funding and more parents have no choice but to leave the workforce in order to take care of their child. Gov. Evers’ plan will not only give more children the nourishment and care they need in these primitive years but will allow individuals to stay in the workforce and provide for their families when encountering a health-related situation due to the proposed paid medical leave.
The special session remains open, giving Republican lawmakers an opportunity to revisit Evers’ bills or propose new legislation. This is our chance to fix the core issues and problems with family and medical leave. Families, providers, and business owners are faced with uncertainty from child care access and paid leave. We must do more to make child care accessible, and position Wisconsin as a worker-friendly state through paid leave.
Gov. Evers’ plan is essential to keeping Wisconsin’s economy and citizens thriving by ensuring stable and proper child care and giving parents the opportunity to remain in the workforce. In addition to more prestige and attraction to UW-Madison, especially for the engineering program. I will continue my support for the future leaders of Wisconsin in hopes for a better child care system, more accessible workforce engagement and continuous improvements to the UW system.”
