Rep. Shelia Stubbs Celebrates Joniah Walker Found Safe
Madison, WI – Joniah Walker, who went missing at the age of 15 on June 23, 2022 from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been found safe. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
“Today is a wonderful day. This morning, I learned the amazing news that Joniah Walker, who has been missing since June 23, 2022, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, has been found safe.
I have been waiting and praying for the day of Joniah’s safe return. I want to thank Ms. Tanesha Howard, Joniah Walker’s mother, for standing beside me in the State Capitol to advocate for a Missing and Murdered African American Women and Girls Task Force for multiple legislative sessions and for never giving up hope that her daughter would, one day, be located alive and safe.
We must use that same hope and determination to continue the search for all missing people across Wisconsin.
I also want to thank all of my legislative colleagues, national and local organizational partners, and community advocates who have supported this legislation and collaborated with me on this important work. I will continue to advocate for this bill to become law and for the task force to be created.
Additionally, I want to thank the media for their diligence in covering Joniah’s story and the stories of other missing Black women and girls, especially since we know that media is 4 times less likely to cover the story of a missing person of color. Awareness and coverage make a difference in bringing our missing loved ones home as quickly as possible, and every missing person deserves to be searched for.
We want to respect the family’s privacy and keep them in prayer. I am so happy and grateful that Joniah is safe, and I will continue to advocate for the safe location of every missing person in our state.”
