Rep. Myers Responds to Criticism Leveled at UWM Chancellor

By - May 21st, 2024 06:16 pm

MADISON– Rep. LaKeshia Myers (D-Milwaukee) issued the following statement regarding criticism by Representative Dave Murphy (R-Greenville) who took issue with UWM Chancellor Mark Mone’s statement condemning antisemitism, Islamophobia, and all other forms of hatred.

College campuses are institutions where dialogue, engagement, and diversity should flourish. The role of a college administrator is to ensure that all students, regardless of race, ethnicity, or religion are able to thrive. Chancellor Mone was correct in the portion of his statement when he denounced antisemitism, Islamaphobia, and all other forms of hatred on campus.

The GOP-controlled legislature has systematically worked to defund and divest from all Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) programs and policies across the state, especially those in the UW system. These are the very programs that help foster campus inclusivity and engagement.

You can’t have it both ways; you cannot in one breath condemn DEI and then in another breath get frustrated when students and faculty lack the resources and skills to address issues regarding racial, religious, and ideological animus.”
