Rep. Donovan Votes to Enshrine Voter ID into the Wisconsin Constitution

Madison – Representative Bob Donovan (R-Greenfield) gave the following statement after voting for passage of SJR 2 to enshrine Voter ID into the Wisconsin Constitution. This is the second consecutive consideration and passage of the constitutional amendment. The resolution passed along party lines by a vote of 54-45.

“Voter ID is not a new concept; we already require IDs for a multitude of seemingly lesser reasons than voting. Why wouldn’t we require ID for voting? This amendment ensures the common sense status quo continues under the protection of our Constitution.” said Rep. Donovan.

Voters should not be worried about potential changes to the voting process. This Constitutional amendment does not changed anything in regards to voting or registering to vote. Additionally, current voter ID exemptions under state law will not be affected. Voter participation has only increased since the implementation of voter ID. In the 2012 election, the general election turnout was 70.14%, while 2024 saw a 72.6% turnout.

“There is a lot being said about this amendment and it can be difficult to find the truth in the middle of it. This amendment is as simple as it comes. This will not decrease voter participation or undermine future elections. In fact, the data shows the opposite is correct,” concluded Rep. Donovan.

The resolution has now passed the Assembly and Senate. Voters will be able to ratify this amendment through a referendum that will appear on the April 2025 statewide ballot.
