Rep. Brostoff Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Legalize Gay Marriage
This ruling makes the United States the 25th country to legalize gay marriage.
MADISON – In a 5-4 ruling the Supreme Court voted this morning to legalize gay marriage nationwide. Prior to the ruling, 37 states, including Wisconsin, issued marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
“I cannot express how happy I am that our nation is finally taking this step. Our neighbors do, and have always, deserved this fundamental right,” said Rep. Jonathan Brostoff (D-Milwaukee). “There could be no better way to end June, LGBTQ Pride Month.”
There are well over 120,000 members of Wisconsin communities that identify as part of the LGBTQ+ population. In 2014, the first year gay marriage was allowed in Wisconsin, marriages increased by nearly 3,000 and divorces dropped by 500.
Brostoff finished by saying, “I am happy for our country and, although there is still work to do, today we took a step forward in living up to our ideals as a nation with liberty and justice for all.”
This ruling makes the United States the 25th country to legalize gay marriage.
