Rep. Barca Statement on Education Proposals
"Every child in Wisconsin deserves a quality education and Governor Walker's expansive voucher program is failing students and taxpayers."
MADISON – Today Assembly Democratic Leader Peter Barca (D-Kenosha) issued the following statement on the education proposals presented today:
“We all profess to share the same goal: taxpayer and student accountability for any schools receiving taxpayer funds. Unfortunately, the Republican bill falls short in many important areas. Democrats have a bill that will create basic protections for all students and taxpayers to keep our kids safe, ensure a quality learning environment and ensure meaningful safeguards at all taxpayer-funded schools.
“Every child in Wisconsin deserves a quality education and Governor Walker‘s expansive voucher program is failing students and taxpayers. We must take action now to ensure that we are standing with students, not special interests who spend heavily in Wisconsin elections.
“Ideally, we can find common ground to protect our students and taxpayers.”

Public school education is an investment in the region and country’s future success. My parents paid for my private school education. I paid for my children’s private school education. Voucher and charter schools have become a tool for Republicans to dismantle equal opportunities and the great equalizer, a public school education that is accountable to the people. Charter and voucher school education are accountable to various profit, political and religious agendas that are promoted by specials interests that do not deserve public support according to our US Constitution.
My family and I both benefited from public school educations including higher level degrees at MATC and UWM.
