Public Works Committee approves projects aimed at roadway improvement, urban canopy enhancement

During today’s meeting of the Public Works Committee, the committee moved approval of files seeking to improve local roadways and enhance Milwaukee’s urban tree canopy.

The first file, supported by 4^th District Alderman and Public Works Committee Chair Robert Bauman, approved roadway improvements along E. Wells St. from Broadway to Van Buren. Among the forthcoming improvements are: asphalt pavement reconstruction; roadway narrowing; replacement of all curb and gutter, sidewalk, and driveway approaches; creation of a raised separated asphalt bike lane; and improved street lighting and traffic signals. “This roadway project will provide great value to the area around Cathedral Square Park that sees high usage by motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. When this project is complete, we will be left with a much safer, user-friendly street for everyone,” said Alderman Bauman.

The second file adopted by the Public Works Committee was a resolution relating to acceptance and funding of a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Inflation Reduction Act Urban and Community Forestry Grant-Growing Milwaukee’s Tree Canopy and Community Resilience.

The file, sponsored by Alderman Bauman, authorizes the city to accept $12 million in grant funding to support tree maintenance and hazardous tree removal, enhance tree planting and asphalt de-paving, provide public outreach and education, and support workforce development.

“This grant funding has the chance to make a significant impact throughout the city, and aligns with the Climate and Equity Plan the Council adopted last year. Over the life of this grant we can expect to see thousands of trees planted, enhanced support for tree pruning, and new urban forestry jobs created. When we talk about cultivating a greener, more sustainable community, these are the types of projects that check all the boxes,” said Alderman Bauman.

Both files will be before the Common Council for adoption at its next meeting set for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, January 17.
