Public Asked to Submit Nominees for City’s 2026 Black History Month Campaign

By - Dec 23rd, 2025 02:07 pm

Organizers of the 2026 City of Milwaukee 28 Days of Black History campaign are asking members of the public to nominate who they believe should be honored as Milwaukee Black history and change makers. The selected honorees will be featured daily on the city website and on the City Channel during February 2026.

“Every year, we seek to honor people within the community who, throughout our city’s history, have broken barriers and cultivated change. This year, we are once again asking the public to submit any nominees for people they think deserve recognition as part of Black History Month,” said Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs, Alderman Russell W. Stamper, II, Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr., Alderwoman Andrea Pratt, Alderman Lamont Westmoreland, Alderwoman Larresa Taylor, Alderwoman Sharlen P. Moore, and Alderman DiAndre Jackson.

The 2026 Black History Month theme will be “A Century of Black History Commemorations.” Nominations should keep the theme in mind and will be accepted until the close of business on January 16, 2026. Nominations should be directed to Deborah.Moore2@milwaukee.gov or can be made by phone to 414-286-2206. When submitting nominations, please consult the past honoree listings at https://city.milwaukee.gov/CommonCouncil/Initiatives/28days (to avoid duplication/repetition), and please provide qualifications and reasoning for the nomination.

The 28 Days of Black History campaign, about to enter its tenth year, is designed to celebrate Milwaukee’s Black history and recognize those who have made positive contributions thereto. Each year, the project also includes a festive public program and celebration at City Hall, which will be held on February 10, 2026.
