Port Milwaukee Helps Move Ascent Project Forward
Last Shipment of Mass Timber Structural Elements Leaving Port Milwaukee for Downtown Tower’s Construction Site
MILWAUKEE, WI – As construction is nearing completion on the 25-story mass timber Ascent tower in Downtown Milwaukee, the Port is highlighting its partnership with the development team on this major project and investment in the city.
New Land Enterprises’ Ascent apartment development is set to be the tallest timber tower in the world. Since construction started in August 2020, the project’s unique mass timber structural components have been shipped to and staged at Federal Marine Terminals (FMT), which is Port Milwaukee’s primary international and breakbulk stevedore.
“The Ascent mass timber tower is a great addition to Downtown Milwaukee and an exciting living option for residents and families,” said Mayor Tom Barrett. “This is a generational development and the City of Milwaukee is proud to be part of this project that is building up our skyline.”
“Port Milwaukee is honored to be part of this remarkable development. This has given us a chance to demonstrate how the Port adds value in local transportation logistics, while providing significant benefits across our regional and international economy,” said Port Milwaukee Director Adam Tindall-Schlicht.
“Ascent is placing Milwaukee in a well-deserved international spotlight. The way that the city has come together to promote innovation, to change the status quo, and to support this project is nothing short of amazing. Our partners at Port Milwaukee, the Department of City Development, the Milwaukee Fire Department, and the Department of Neighborhood Services have been invaluable resources,” said Tim Gokhman, Managing Director of New Land Enterprises.
Port Milwaukee is an economic entity of City government governed by the seven-member Board of Harbor Commissioners, a panel appointed by Mayor Tom Barrett and confirmed by the Common Council. It administers operations on the 467 acres that make up the Port. It promotes shipping and commerce throughout the region by providing access to domestic and international ships, rail, and over-the-road transportation.
