Pocan Calls for Appropriations Hearing with DeJoy to Address Postal Delays

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Representative Mark Pocan (WI-02), a senior member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, wrote to Steve Womack (AR-03), the Chair of the subcommittee, and Ranking Member Steny Hoyer (MD-05), calling on them to invite Postmaster General Louis DeJoy for a hearing. This follows a letter Congressman Pocan sent to the Postmaster General last week after reports of increasingly widespread delays and disruptions in mail delivery and postal services affecting residents in his district.

“My office has heard from residents in the district who have been frustrated by significant delays in their mail delivery which has affected their ability to receive paychecks and Social Security checks on time, pay their bills, and receive lifesaving prescription medications, jeopardizing their health, safety, and well-being,” Pocan wrote.

“This is simply unacceptable. While I am hopeful that Postmaster General DeJoy will accept my invitation and take seriously the concerns of my constituents, I also believe that we cannot simply hope for improvements, but also have a responsibility to exercise our oversight authority of the USPS as members of the House Appropriations Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee,” Pocan continued.

“The Postal Service is a vital lifeline for millions of Americans across the country, and although the agency has faced financial difficulties for some time, Postmaster General DeJoy’s tenure has brought an increased level of instability that cannot go unaddressed by Congress. To that end, I strongly urge you to include an oversight hearing on the United States Postal Service in the upcoming Fiscal Year 2025 appropriations hearing schedule,” Pocan wrote.

    Pocan is a national treasure.

  2. BigRed81 says:

DeJoy’s agenda was & is getting Trump elected. He removed Fast Sorting machines to delay Absentee Ballots. Why wasn’t he fired & convicted?
His goal is sabotage the US Postal Service. Right-wingers will privitize for-profit. Google ALEC

  3. ZeeManMke says:

DeJoy is a criminal. Biden appointees are now a majority of the Postal
Board of Governors. So why hasn’t DeJoy been fired? The mail slowdown
is real, and is harming people, including myself, and Biden does nothing. Why?
And where is the idiot Democratic US Rep. from Milwaukee on this?
The US Member of the House? Asleep? She couldn’t care less. Cashing
in on other people’s problems is what she does best.

Yes, many of us would like for DeJoy to be fired. Unfortunately, the president cannot directly fire the postmaster general. It must be done by the U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors. If only we knew why they have not replaced DeJoy.

There are no other steps President Biden can take to remove DeJoy.

Congresswoman Moore has no authority or responsibility for this issue, short of the step taken by Congressman Pocan to request information from DeJoy on specific issues.

What documentation do you have for your allegations that Congresswoman Moore is cashing in on other people’s problems? That would be helpful for future reference.

(excerpts from a October 2022 link below from the “Save The Post Office Coalition”.As usual, Democratic Party leadership is more inclined to kick democratic voters in the shins rather than listen).

The Save the Post Office Coalition, a network of over 300 public interest groups, calls on President Biden to nominate Rep. Brenda Lawrence and Sarah Anderson to the USPS Board of Governors, using his full authority to appoint two governors who will protect and expand USPS…
The President has the power to name two progressives to the postal board. Given the current party affiliations of the Postal Board, he is not statutorily prevented from selecting two Democratic nominees to replace Donald Moak and William Zollars. In light of mounting obstructionism from the Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee’s Republican membership in refusing to confirm even moderate Democratic nominees to federal posts, and the urgency of saving the Post Office, these nominees are a compelling case for a potential tie-breaking vote from the Vice President in the evenly divided Senate. The rare freedom the bylaws of the board grant President Biden to choose nominees without partisan constraints should not be taken for granted.

@Duane: Thanks for the additional info.

  7. ZeeManMke says:

The Postal Board has 11 members. 9 can vote. 6 are a quorum. Today it has 3 Democrats, 3 Republicans, and an Independent appointed by Biden. That’s 4-3 and they could vote to get rid of DeJoy and his $305,000/year salary at any time. So what are they waiting for? People are
being harmed. The election is coming up. The time to act is now.

I am so frustrated with DeJoy still holding his job after mountains of evidence.
