MADISON – Statement from Mike Murray, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin (PPAWI):

“PPAWI congratulates all of our endorsed candidates for the inspiring campaigns they ran in the August partisan primary. We are proud of our endorsed candidates who won their contested primary races and will be moving on to the general election: Sen. LaTonya Johnson (SD-6); Jonathon Hansen (SD-30); Brad Pfaff (SD-32); Rep. Marisabel Cabrera (AD-9); Rep. Lisa Subeck (AD-78); Rep. Sondy Pope (AD-80); and Kristina Shelton (AD-90). We know these candidates will help bring a bold vision for the future of our state to voters in the November election and win important races that will help ensure our state legislature reflects our values and the communities it is supposed to represent and serve.”

“One of the most exciting developments we have witnessed during this already extraordinary election year is the boldness many candidates have shown to center a vision for our state that is rooted in social justice, including a commitment to ensure that everyone in Wisconsin should have access to the sexual and reproductive health care they need, when they need it. The fact that so many candidates are proactively speaking about the long overdue need to support community-led movements for racial justice also lends hope to what we can achieve when our actions come from a place of shared values to demand that elected leaders work to create a state where every community has what it needs to be healthy and thrive.”

“None of these results would be possible without a continued commitment from Wisconsinites to uphold our state’s proud tradition of civic engagement, even as they exercise their right to vote under the shadow of a pandemic. Our staff, supporters, and volunteers engage in year-round civic engagement efforts to inform and empower communities, and we continued to adapt these efforts to make sure our supporters had the information they needed for the partisan primary. PPAWI sent over 41,000 text messages, made over 6,800 phone calls, and reached over 596,000 people on social media to assist them with voter registration, requesting absentee ballots, returning their absentee ballots, and providing them with information about the candidates we endorsed.”

“As we celebrate these victories, we will continue to mobilize our supporters to hold our elected officials accountable and support candidates who will fight for policies to create a more just Wisconsin for everyone.”
