Old World Wisconsin Announces Magical,Scandinavian Midsummer Celebration on June 20 and 21
Experience the whimsy of the summer solstice and celebrate the longest day of the year with flower drying, maypole dancing, open-hearth cooking, nature studies and more!
EAGLE, Wis. — Dance around the Maypole, create a floral crown and experience the festive spirit of a Scandinavian Midsummer celebration at Old World Wisconsin on June 20 and 21. Inspired by centuries-old traditions from Norway, Sweden, Finland, Iceland and Denmark, this two-day event welcomes the summer season with hands-on activities, historic demonstrations, tastings, crafts and cultural traditions honoring the year’s longest days.
Throughout the celebration, guests can immerse themselves in the customs of Scandinavian immigrant communities at Old World Wisconsin’s Finnish, Danish and Norwegian farmsteads. Activities include participating in a Maypole Dance, flower drying and wool dyeing demonstrations, learning basic Scandinavian phrases and watching open-hearth cooking demonstrations featuring traditional Norwegian recipes. A floral crown-making experience is available with a $6 time travel token and guests (21+) can also sample traditional brews in the Brewhouse.
“Midsummer is one of Scandinavia’s most treasured seasonal celebrations,” said Doug Raney, attractions director, Old World Wisconsin. “The traditions brought to Wisconsin by Scandinavian immigrant communities come alive at our historic farmsteads, giving guests a chance to experience the joy associated with this special time of the year.”
Dating back to the Iron age, Midsummer traditions marked the arrival of the summer solstice and offered communities a chance to leave behind the long winter season and welcome months of sunlight, offering the hope of an abundant harvest and renewal.
At Old World Wisconsin, guests can also enjoy the beauty of nature by hiking one of the trails that wind through the 600-acre living history attraction in the Kettle Moraine.
The Midsummer Celebration will take place on June 20 and 21 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is included with general admission. Spring and summer admission rates are $24 for adults and teens, $20 for seniors (65+), $16 for children ages 5–12, and free for children under five. Wisconsin Historical Society members receive free general admission to all sites, including Old World Wisconsin, and 10% off ticketed events and store merchandise. Parking is included in admission.
