HARTFORD, Conn. – Facing its second ranked opponent of the season, the Marquette women’s basketball team (7-4, 2-1 BIG EAST) suffered an 89-53 setback at No. 1 UConn (11-0, 3-0 BIG EAST) on Wednesday night inside PeoplesBank Arena.

Marquette was led by Skylar Forbes, who finished with 17 points, three rebounds and a block. Halle Vice added six points and five rebounds.

UConn jumped out to a 12-6 lead heading into the first media timeout. Following the break, the Huskies went on an 8-2 run to extend the advantage to 20-8 and force a Marquette timeout. The stoppage briefly settled the Golden Eagles, but eight first-quarter turnovers proved costly as Marquette trailed 27-12 after one. UConn showed why it is the nation’s top-ranked team, shooting 61 percent (19-of-31) from the field in the opening half. Marquette went into halftime, down 46-21.

The Golden Eagles opened the second half 1-of-9 from the field, while UConn converted 10 of its first 14 attempts, including three triples, to build on its halftime lead. The Huskies maintained control throughout the remainder of the third. With the game in hand for the Huskies, Marquette showed no quit during the final 10 minutes, outscoring UConn by eight in the fourth quarter before falling 89-53.
