No. 5/4 #MUBB Falls 81-70 at No. 6/5 Iowa State
Golden Eagles host No. 11/11 Wisconsin on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. CT
The No. 5/4 Marquette University men’s basketball team (8-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) dropped an 81-70 decision at No. 6/5 Iowa State (6-1, 0-0 Big 12) on Thursday night in Hilton Coliseum in the Big 12-BIG EAST Battle.
After trailing by double figures for a majority of the first portion of the second half, the Golden Eagles used a 10-0 run to tie the score at 61-61 with 9:06 left on a layup by Jones. ISU, however, responded with a 14-0 run of its own and was able to hold off Marquette for the victory.
Marquette trailed 46-37 at the intermission after allowing ISU to shoot 64.3 percent from the floor. Freshman Damarius Owens led the way offensively with nine points, knocking down all three of his 3-point attempts. MU, however, shot just 44.1 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes.
Notables:
- Marquette is now 5-4 all-time against Iowa State, with the most recent matchup in the 2004 National Invitation Tournament
- Guard Stevie Mitchell has scored the team’s first basket in 5-of-9 games
- Freshman Damarius Owens made each of his first seven career 3-point attempts to start the season
- Junior guard Chase Ross was limited to just 10 minutes after suffering an ankle injury in the first half
