Milwaukee – (September 27, 2023) – The Warehouse Art Museum will host Brooklyn artist Carla Gannis on October 5, 2023, as part of an ongoing Artist Talk series. Gannis will be giving a presentation on her work followed by a Q&A session.

Gannis’ 2023 piece, Virtues and Vices, is a video created about artificial intelligence using several cutting-edge technologies, including generative AI. This work is currently on display as part of the Pause/Connect photography exhibit at the Warehouse Art Museum through November 10.

“The eight “avatars” in the video are bigger than life, with bold ideas, funny and threatening. Maura the Robotic Muse wants to comfort you, love you, and have sex with you. Oliver, having access to all knowledge through ChatGPT, describes himself as the next messiah. He is omniscient. He wants you to trust him, of course,” describes the museum’s director, John Shannon.

Working in unique mediums, Gannis’ work inevitably piques curiosity– Why did Gannis create Virtues and Vices? What is the technology behind the video? With the recent articles and discussion about AI, what are her thoughts and concerns now?

Gannis teaches at New York University in the Department of Technology, Culture, and Society. While she holds an MFA in painting from Boston University, today she fuses technology and traditional media into detailed video presentations with multilayered narratives.

The Artist Talk presentation will begin promptly at 4pm. The event space will open for seating at 3:30pm. Tickets for this event are free, and can be reserved on Eventbrite.

All events held at WAM are free and open to the public. Registration required.
