MSOC Adds Clancy and Mallace as Assistant Coaches
First-year Marquette head coach David Korn has announced the initial additions of Sean Clancy and Calum Mallace as assistant coaches to the program officially on Thursday morning.
Sean Clancy joins Korn from his most recent stop at Maryville University and will serve as the program’s goalkeeper coach.
“I’ve been fortunate to work with Sean over the past five years and witness his knowledge and expertise as a coach,” Korn said. “Not only is he an expert in coaching players especially at the goalkeeper position, but he’s also phenomenal at his ability to support the development of our student-athletes.”
Clancy served under Korn for four seasons at Maryville, most recently as a goalkeepers coach (2020-21). During Clancy’s tenure, the Saints compiled a 65-21-18 record and advanced to four NCAA tournament appearances (2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023). Clancy helped the program to two Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) championships during the 2020-21 and 2022 season. In 2022, Clancy helped the program to its first GLVC tournament championship in addition to a conference regular season crown.
Clancy spent the 2018 season as a goalkeeper of Vrigstad IF in Sweden. Prior to his stop overseas, he played a year at both the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Clancy earned his degree in chemistry from UMKC while playing overseas.
Marquette Soccer alumnus Calum Mallace (2008-11) joins the MU staff from Loyola University Chicago.
“Calum has a powerful passion and love for Marquette University, and it is obvious his values align with the University’s mission and values,” Korn said. “He’s a long-time pro, and as a coach he’ll greatly support the development of our student-athletes. He’ll have a big impact in helping us create a culture of excellence on and off the field.”
Mallace joins the Golden Eagles after working most recently under Steve Bode for three seasons (2021-23) at Loyola Chicago. The Ramblers compiled a 26-9-14 record, including an Atlantic 10 tournament championship match appearance. Mallace began his coaching career at Northwestern in January 2020, assuming the role of Director of Player Development before being promoted to assistant coach just six months later.
Prior to his coaching career, Mallace, a native of Torphichen, Scotland, strung together an impressive professional career that included stops with Major League Soccer’s (MLS) Montreal Impact (2012-17), Seattle Sounders (2017), and Los Angeles FC (2018), making 85 appearances during his MLS career. The 20th overall pick in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by the Impact, Mallace also spent the 2019 season with Austin Bold FC of the USL Championship.
Mallace is a two-time All-BIG EAST Conference selection during his time at Marquette. He racked up 13 goals and 13 assists across 69 career appearances for the Golden Eagles. As a senior, he was tabbed a Second Team All-American by College Soccer News in addition to being named the BIG EAST’s Midfielder of the Year.
