MLAX Dominates Detroit Mercy in 15-4 Road Win
Westphal nets career-high four goals in dominate victory
DETROIT, Mich. – The Marquette University men’s lacrosse team (2–2, 0-0 BIG EAST) used a dominant offensive performance to secure a 15–4 victory over the University of Detroit Mercy Titans (1-4, 0-0 NEC) on Monday afternoon at Titan Field.
Marquette wasted little time getting on the board, as Matt Caputo opened the scoring midway through the first quarter. After Detroit Mercy evened the score at 1–1, the Golden Eagles responded with three straight goals from Andrew Bowman, Rappis and Ethan Salvia to take a 4–1 lead after the opening frame.
The momentum continued in the second quarter. Westphal sparked the period with an early unassisted goal, and Marquette rattled off four more scores to extend the lead to 8–1 at halftime.
Out of the break, the Golden Eagles kept their foot on the gas. Rappis and Westphal each contributed to a four-goal third quarter as Marquette pushed the advantage to 12–3 entering the final 15 minutes.
Detroit Mercy found the net once more early in the fourth, but Marquette answered with three of the game’s final goals, including a man-up score from Mullen, to close out the 15–4 victory.
