Milwaukee Public Schools set to welcome students back to school
Early Start Calendar schools to begin virtual learning Monday, August 17
MILWAUKEE (August 14, 2020) — Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) will begin its school year for students following the Early Start Calendar Monday, August 17. Students at more than 40 schools will start the academic year virtually as all MPS schools will facilitate learning online due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are thrilled to welcome our early start students and staff back to learning,” MPS Superintendent Dr. Keith P. Posley said. “Whether it’s in-person or virtual, the first day of school should always be a special moment in a child’s life, regardless of grade level. We share that excitement with our young people and our staff as we provide the best educational experience.”
Milwaukee Public Schools follows the Early Start Calendar for its high schools, middle schools, and some elementary schools. Students on the Traditional Start Calendarwill begin Tuesday, September 1.
Earlier this month, Early Start Calendar students participated in Welcome Week, which included Freshman Bridge for the rising class of 2024. During that week, students met school staff, participated in team building activities, and received instructional materials, Chromebooks, school gear, and masks.
MPS is reminding all families to be prepared for a successful start to the school year by:
- Contacting their child’s school to pick up a Chromebook and instructional materials
- Finding a quiet, comfortable place for their child to work
- Having pens, pencils, paper and notebooks
- Following the schedule provided by their school to log in for online learning
Families can still enroll their child by visiting the MPS website or by calling (414) 267-5100.
Dr. Posley and other district staff will be available to answer questions from media in regard to the first day of school. Media will have an opportunity to be led on a staggered tour and observe some classrooms.
