Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) and Milwaukee Recreation announced that more than 10,000 young people have earned their probationary driver’s licenses and completed safe-driving instruction through the MPS Drive initiative since its launch in 2016.

MPS Drive offers low-cost driver education to currently-enrolled MPS students ages 15 to 17.5. The course is free for all eligible students, with only a $35 fee required for a temporary permit. Coursework is available in online, hybrid, and in-person formats and includes 30 hours of classroom instruction along with behind-the-wheel training.

“Reaching the 10,000 milestone in probationary licenses obtained by teens who have participated in the MPS Drive program showcases the positive results a driver education program can have when restrictive barriers, such as cost, are removed from the equation,” said Nicole Jacobson, Recreation Manager. “Our ultimate goal is to have every MPS student graduate with a high school diploma in one hand and a valid driver’s license in the other.”

Registration for the winter/spring MPS Drive session is now open. For more information and to register visit mkerec.net/drive.
