Milwaukee PBS Celebrates 65th Anniversary
October 28, 1957 to October 28, 2022 - 65 Years of Public Service
MILWAUKEE; October 25, 2022 – On October 28, Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson will proclaim it Milwaukee PBS Day in Milwaukee to honor the station’s 65th anniversary. The year was 1957. Eisenhower was president, Elvis Presley rocked and poodle skirts were all the rage. In Milwaukee, Frank Zeidler was mayor, people shopped at Schuster’s Department Store and the Milwaukee Braves beat the New York Yankees in the World Series.
Milwaukee PBS began broadcasting on October 28, 1957, becoming the nation’s 28th educational television station on WMVS-TV. The station was licensed to Milwaukee Area Technical College which had established a hands-on Television Production Course in 1952.
Today, Milwaukee PBS offers its two over-the-air channels in high definition, and four additional channels – WORLD, PBS KIDS, and CREATE, as well as a weather/traffic channel.
The station is proud of its award winning locally-produced programs that bring your stories to the viewers of Southeast Wisconsin. Local programs include 10 thirtysix, Adelante, Black Nouveau and The Arts Page. National programs are a vital part of Milwaukee PBS’ lineup including PBS Newshour, Frontline, NOVA, and Masterpiece. Also, Milwaukee PBS presents My Wisconsin Backyard, a digital series, and Speaking Of… the station’s first podcast.
