Milwaukee Health Department not following minimum recommendations of State Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Handbook for Public Health Departments
Follow-up blood lead monitoring, the City of Milwaukee Health Department is not even doing that and that is the minimum recommended action when lead is found in a child's blood.
MILWAUKEE – MESSAGE FROM FLAC: The link below is to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention and Control Handbook for Public Health Departments. If you go to page 104 there are the recommended actions based on blood lead levels following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines.
https://www.dhs.wisconsin.gov/publications/p00660.pdf
If you look at what is recommended at the very minimum of a child being tested with any amount of lead in the blood: 1) Provide lead education, 2) Conduct an environmental assessment for pre-1978 housing, and 3) Follow-up blood lead monitoring, the City of Milwaukee Health Department (MHD) is not even doing that and that is the minimum recommended action when lead is found in a child’s blood.
Please take a closer look at what is recommended for higher blood lead levels. Physical exams, lab work, environmental investigations, abdominal X-rays and in the highest lead blood levels hospitalization and therapy. None of this was being done by MHD!
