Milwaukee Community Journal Endorses Brittany Kinser in Race for DPI Superintendent

MADISON, Wisc. – On Thursday, the Milwaukee Community Journal, the largest African-American newspaper in Wisconsin, announced its endorsement of Brittany Kinser in the race for DPI Superintendent.

“The quality of education for Milwaukee students has deteriorated over the past 20 years, with the racial academic achievement gap widening and reading proficiency rates soaring. One of the widest gaps occurred during the reign of state Superintendent Jill Underly, whose only remedy was to lower testing standards. That’s why a who’s who of Black educators and civic activists have endorsed ‘reform’ candidate Brittany Kinser for state superintendent of the Department of Public Instruction. From John Daniels to Dr. Howard Fuller to Colleston Morgan, the list of Kinser supporters leaves little doubt about the importance of next Tuesday’s election and our participation in that life-altering process.” The Milwaukee Community Journal writes in its endorsement of Kinser.

The paper, which has been serving the African-American community since 1976 went on to say, “Kinser is not a miracle worker and isn’t armed with Thor’s hammer. But her resume speaks to her being a valued change agent, and equally important, she has a history of focusing on the needs of the underserved. Her track record attests to her prioritizing the needs of the poor and minority students… Kinser has successfully worked with poor and minority children, primarily students who have been shortchanged by systems that consider them castoffs, incorrigible ($$$) statistics, or unable to master the basics of reading and writing. (They love to blame poverty for failure).”

In response to the endorsement, Brittany Kinser released the following statement: I am honored and humbled to receive the endorsement of the Milwaukee Community Journal, the largest African-American newspaper in our state. I am committed to working with leaders in Milwaukee – and across the state, to close the achievement gap and ensure every child can read, write, and do math well.”
