MILWAUKEE (September 26, 2025) – The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is pleased to announce a new three-year collective bargaining agreement that underscores their shared commitment to serving riders, supporting employees, and strengthening the community. The agreement prioritizes safety and security, fair compensation, and the long-term financial sustainability of transit operations.

“On behalf of all Milwaukee County residents, I commend the Milwaukee County Transit System and the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 998 for reaching a fair agreement that will meet the needs of working families in our community,” said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley. “MCTS plays a critical role in connecting people to jobs, healthcare, education, and essential services. Now more than ever, we must come together to ensure people who rely on public transit can continue utilizing this service for years to come. I’m proud to stand in support of both MCTS and the ATU, as we continue serving passengers and supporting bus operators across Milwaukee County.”

MCTS President and CEO Steve Fuentes said, “We appreciate the dedication and collaboration of ATU Local 998 leadership and its members in reaching this agreement. As we continue aligning our services with our budget, strong partnerships like this will be key to streamlining operations, attracting and retaining top talent, and ensuring a sustainable future for public transit in Milwaukee County.”

The newly ratified contract includes changes to maintain the long-term stability of the system, such as:

  • Safety Provisions: MCTS leadership and ATU Local 998 members agreed to several provisions that reinforce the importance of safety and security throughout the workplace.
  • Competitive Wage Increases: Bus operators and mechanics will receive a competitive wage increase spread over three years, recognizing their essential contributions to the community.

Members of ATU Local 998, including bus drivers, mechanics, and maintenance workers, voted to ratify the new proposal on September 26, 2025. The new contract will remain in place through March 31, 2028. While the specific details of the agreement are not currently available pending ATU leadership’s notification of its members, the terms will help more than 20 million riders in Milwaukee County get to work, school, and essential destinations every year.
