About Tenor High School

Students at Tenor get a jump start on their career and education pathways through a unique partnership with Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) by which they attend, at no cost to them or their families, MATC their senior year. Making the most of that experience means learning what careers and opportunities are available and what it takes to be successful in various positions. As the end of their junior year arrives, students at Tenor complete the MATC registration process and enroll in classes they will attend as high school seniors. Carol Pook, guidance counselor, has been helping students through this process since the program began 17 years ago. Carol credits the success of Tenor students to the support they receive while still in high school. “Negotiating a large institution’s systems can be overwhelming, especially for a first-generation college student. The Tenor program teaches students how to use the academic and personal support offered at colleges and universities. Our students understand that the best students use their resources!” According to Executive Director, Marcia Spector, the mission has always, and will always, remain the same: “The Tenor High School mission is to prepare Milwaukee students for successful entry to post-secondary education and career opportunities through the dual completion of a high school diploma and a Milwaukee Area Technical College program certificate or technical diploma, and/or credits in a post-secondary degree program.” The Tenor program recently expanded to two campuses with the acquisition and repurposing renovation of two of the former Milwaukee Journal buildings in March of 2021. Students moved into one of the buildings in November 2021. The Innovation Center is located in the second adjacent building. The second building will allow further expansion to accommodate more students once funding is secured. The first and original campus, Tenor Cathedral Square, located at 840 North Jackson Street, remains at full capacity.
