MILWAUKEE – “Our Children, Our Future” is the theme of this year’s public celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center, Monday, Jan. 15, beginning at noon. The Center is located at 1531 W. Vliet St.

To honor King, the program will include music, dance, and spoken word, and will feature guest speaker Nicole Brookshire, Director of the newly created Milwaukee County Office on African-American Affairs (OAAA).

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said, “As Dr. King looked to a brighter future, he noted, ‘This will be the day when all of God’s children will be able to sing with new meaning: “My country, ’tis of thee, sweet land of liberty. . . .let freedom ring.”’ He taught us that if America is to become great, freedom must ring for us all.”

As director of the OAAA, Brookshire is developing policies and plans to identify and address the racial inequities faced by the County’s African-American population. Raised in Milwaukee by a family with an entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic, Brookshire holds an MBA and has nearly 20 years of leadership and strategic-planning experience in areas that include educational programs and partnerships, grants compliance, process improvement, and team development.

An open house will follow the program, and a teen dance party will run from 6–9 p.m. in the gym.

Discounted Center memberships, which include admission to both the King and Kosciuszko community centers, will be offered at the King Center only, Jan. 15 from 9–11 a.m. and following the program until 6 p.m., and Jan. 16 from 9 a.m.–8 p.m.

For more information, call the King Center at 414-344-5600. ADA accommodation requests may be filed with the Milwaukee County Office for Persons with Disabilities by calling 278-3932 (voice) or 711 (TRS).
