(MADISON) – On Sunday, Senator Lena Taylor (D-Milwaukee) will receive a Lifetime Service Award from the Milwaukee Community Journal for her diligence and dedication for the betterment of the Milwaukee community.

On August 7th the Milwaukee Community Journal will host their 2016 Beacons of Light 40th Anniversary Jazz Festival, where they will honor all their special recognitions of excellence and achievement. The Milwaukee Community Journal brings to light social issues such as gun control, criminal justice and public education all of which are areas of focus for Taylor.

“It is such an honor to receive a Lifetime Service Award from the Community Journal,” said Taylor. “The 101 laws I authored over my career didn’t write themselves and they didn’t advocate for themselves. I appreciate all the help and support I’ve gotten through the years from advocates and the media to get the word out about creating positive change for our people.”

Taylor’s legislative accomplishments include improving public safety, education, and health. Her role as a Senator encompasses more than just writing laws. She’s also brought millions of dollars of funding back to the community and listened to the voices of over 50,000 people who have contacted her throughout her career.

“Throughout my life, I’ve tried to do right by others and give a voice to the voiceless,” said Taylor. “It is humbling to be recognized along with so many other great African American leaders.”

Senator Taylor is a product of the Milwaukee Public Schools. She received her undergraduate degree from UW-Milwaukee and her law degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. Taylor served the people as a Public Defender for Milwaukee.  Senator Taylor still holds free legal clinics, visits schools and participates in food drives for the less fortunate. She raises her son on the same block she grew up on.
