League of Women Voters Presents a Local Focus on Climate Change, Nov. 16
Milwaukee — The League of Women Voters of Milwaukee County is presenting a public issues forum titled “Climate Change: Origins, Impacts, Solutions” on November 16, 2022, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Summit Place, 6737 W. Washington St., West Allis. The event is free and open to the public.
The presentation will include an overview of the impacts of rising global temperatures, as well as local actions that can combat the effects of climate change close to home. The program’s presenter is David H. Petering, Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Emeritus, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
Climate change presents an existential threat to the future of life on Earth. The presentation will discuss the origins of climate change within the context of Earth as a life-sustaining planet, followed by an overview of the impacts of rising global temperatures across the globe. The focus will then shift to technical solutions that have the potential to transform the world’s economies to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Milwaukee’s Climate and Equity Plan will be highlighted to illustrate the promise and the challenges of this far-reaching objective — and whether technological fixes can be implemented in time and at the scale necessary in the USA without a drastic change in our collective values.
