MILWAUKEE (October 10, 2023) – On March 11th, 2020, days before the pandemic, Lakefront Brewery became the first brewery in Wisconsin to become a Certified B Corp. And as of September of 2023, Lakefront has been recertified. The “B” stands for Benefit under three pillars of change: Climate Justice, Racial Equity, and a Stakeholder Economy. The B Corp movement works to change our economic system to positively impact all stakeholders: workers, communities, customers, and the planet.

“I’m thrilled that we’ve received our recertification and are proud of our employees, not only for the work that they put in to achieve this again, but to the continuous improvements that we have made to build our brewery as a force for good,” said Lakefront’s President, Russ Klisch. “Exceeding the minimum score to achieve B Corp certification is the best way to show employees and others that our company balances profit and purpose.”

Lakefront Brewery’s efforts to improve and evolve business as a force for good include the creation of their “Ripple Effect” charitable program that uses local action to create a positive impact throughout the community. Employees volunteer their time cleaning up along the river with Milwaukee Riverkeeper, packing kits for Milwaukee Diaper Mission, and preparing food at Tricklebee Café, a local pay-what-you-can community café, among other things.

Lakefront has been supporting several causes through the sales of crowlers. Their current Ripple Effect crowler benefits Groundwork Milwaukee, a nonprofit organization and land trust.

“I’m so grateful to work at Lakefront, a brewery that is whole-heartedly Milwaukee, in a way that connects to a global community through the B Corp Certification, added Lakefront’s Excise Tax & Compliance Officer, Kelsey Moses. “Russ has always been a pioneer, so it makes sense that our very first recertification came complete with an onsite review that 10% of Certified B Corps are selected for each year. Recertifying with 81.5 points means we continue to meet high standards of social and environmental impact, one Riverwest Stein at a time.”

Lakefront Brewery invites everyone to celebrate this achievement by joining them at 1872 N. Commerce St., Milwaukee, on October 23rd 5pm-8pm for “Blab with B Lab,” a happy hour and conversation with Rose Lavelle, Senior B Local Program Manager for B Lab U.S. and Canada.

Lakefront Brewery, Inc. distributes its products to over 30 states, Ukraine, and Canada. Lakefront Brewery is the first brewery in Wisconsin and 22nd brewery in the world to be certified as a B Corporation. Lakefront Brewery also produced the first beer in the United States made from 100% in-state-grown ingredients, including a first-of-its-kind, indigenous Wisconsin yeast strain (Wisconsinite Summer Weiss), the first certified organic brewery and the first gluten-free beer granted approval by the U.S. Government (New Grist).
