It’s Time to Keep Youth Safe and Engaged This Summer

Statement from Alderwoman Sharlen P. Moore

By - Mar 30th, 2026 03:23 pm

What happened yesterday (Sunday, March 29) at Bayshore Town Center was sad, frightening, and absolutely unacceptable.

Hundreds of teens and young people showed up at the Glendale shopping center in a ‘takeover’ event publicized on social media, sparking fights, disorder, and dysfunction. Reports indicate that 13 people were arrested, and Glendale Police, the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, and mall security worked for hours to clear the area and disperse the crowd.

I want to commend the Milwaukee community violence intervention organizations that responded, including 414 Life, Advance d Peace, Milwaukee County Credible Messengers and Comforce MKE, who worked to deescalate and intervened in several violent incidents.

As a mother, mentor and elected leader, I am saddened and disappointed that this ‘event’ happened, and I know many in our community feel the same. Our youth and the community deserves better, and our families (and community members) must do better. Frankly, this is not the summer we want to have.

That is why I am hosting the inaugural All In, All Youth, All Summer Resource and Employment Fair on Thursday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Baird Center Ballroom, 405 W. Kilbourn Ave. The event is a citywide effort connecting elementary through college-age youth with local organizations that offer enriching summer programs, apprenticeships, support resources, and meaningful employment opportunities that prepare young people for future success and have a productive summer.

If you have loved ones who fit the age range for the event on Thursday, PLEASE let them know about it and strongly encourage them to attend.

I have attached the event flyer so that it can be shared electronically.

I hope to see thousands of teens and young adults on Thursday at the Baird Center.
