House of History Launches Website to Uplift Black LGBTQ+ Stories

By - Jun 12th, 2024 08:25 am

The House of History, a Diverse & Resilient program dedicated to collecting and sharing local Black LGBTQ+ history in creative and compelling ways, has launched a new website to act as a platform for the dozens of interviews, videos, and art pieces created to be showcased to the broader public. The website, www.houseofhistorymke.org, includes 24 stories sharing the history of Milwaukee’s Black LGBTQ+ community.

Alderman Peter Burgelis and Alderwoman JoCasta Zamarripa applaud the effort to share this important part of Milwaukee’s history. “The House of History has done amazing work to provide a platform for this important part of our community’s history, and their new website visualizes this history in a beautiful and educational manner,” said Alderman Burgelis. “There remain an overwhelming amount of unique stories to tell in this space, and I look forward to seeing what comes next.”

Alderwoman Zamarripa shares the sentiment. “One of my hopes is that younger generations, particularly those in the LGBTQ+ community, see these stories and become motived and inspired to continue pushing to for a future with greater equality for everyone,” she said. “Uplifting all voices within our community, both past and present, is crucial, and I commend the work done thus far by House of History to amplify the stories that have helped shape Milwaukee.”

Videos on the website are also accessible and available for use from the House of History YouTube channel @houseofhistoryMKE.
