Habitat for Humanity begins construction on new houses in Harambee
Statement of Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs March 16, 2022
Earlier today Habitat for Humanity launched their 2022 building year at two sites in the Harambee neighborhood in the 6th Aldermanic District. This is a continuation of the organization’s goal to build 80 new homes over four years in the area.
This partnership has been a shining example of community collaboration. In 2021 I was proud to support an effort that sold 41 City-owned vacant lots to Habitat for $1 per lot. This when combined with Habitat’s work and a generous gift of $1 million from Bader Philanthropies allows for the creation of safe, affordable housing that will provide families the tools to build wealth and equity.Habitat has been a tremendous partner in recent years as they work with the City and surrounding community to build affordable homes that will be occupied by first-time homeowners. I want to thank Habitat for Humanity, as well as Bader Philanthropies, project volunteers and other area stakeholders for their continued work that has proven invaluable for Harambee residents as we strive to build a stronger Milwaukee.
