Governor Evers Visits Flood Victims in 2nd District

Statement from Alderman Mark Chambers, Jr. August 12, 2025

By - Aug 12th, 2025 10:36 am

Yesterday, Governor Tony Evers declared a state of emergency as a response to the historic flooding seen in our area. As part of this announcement, Governor Evers visited residences in the 2nd District to see first-hand the damage that has been done, and the disruption this has caused to so many within the community.

I want to thank the Governor for taking the time to meet with residents, and show his support and solidarity with all those impacted in this moment. We know we have a lengthy recovery ahead of us, but declaring this state of emergency will allow local agencies to continue their work on the ground, and provide a pathway to assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

For those in need – The American Red Cross has emergency shelters at Holler Park, 5151 S. Sixth St., and Washington Park Senior Center, 4420 W. Vliet St. There will be food, water, emotional support and charging areas at each shelter. Walk-ins are welcome or call 1-800-733-2767.

The Department of Public Works will be doing free special bulky item pickups for households with City garbage collection service, and fees will be waived for flood related bulky item pickup. Residents should place items at their regular garbage collection point. If material is not able to be collected on the normal collection day this week, crews will refer those addresses and the department will schedule a follow-up pickup. City drop-off centers will be operating with extended hours, and will be free of charge to city residents to support recovery efforts.
