MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers announced today his appointment of Stephanie Hilton to the Dane County Circuit Court, Branch 8. The appointment will fill the vacancy being created by Frank D. Remington’s retirement. Hilton will complete a term ending July 31, 2026.

“Stephanie Hilton is a highly regarded attorney known for her integrity, prosecutorial experience, and a deep commitment to her community,” said Gov. Evers. “She will be an exceptional judge for the people of Dane County.”

Since 2020, Hilton has been an assistant attorney general at the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), where she co-leads the Wisconsin Sexual Assault Kit Initiative and has co-chaired jury trials involving multiple felony count sexual assault charges. Hilton’s previous experience prior to joining the DOJ includes having worked in both legislative and executive branches of government, as well as spending five years as an assistant district attorney, first in La Crosse County and then in Dane County. During this time, she was the lead prosecutor on multiple felony jury trials, including child abuse, domestic violence, homicide, and sexual assault.

“Stephanie brings her dedication to public service and justice with her to the circuit court,” said Dane County Circuit Court Judge Diane Schlipper. “Her extensive volunteer work with social service agencies demonstrates her unwavering dedication to improving our community. She brings this commitment with her to the courtroom, where I witnessed her skillfully practice for many years, and where she treats everyone fairly and with dignity. Stephanie will be a welcome addition to the Dane County Circuit Court.”

Hilton lives in Madison with her family and is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Superior and the University of Wisconsin Law School. She is currently a board member and co-secretary of JustDane, a board member and secretary of Prairie Moraine Friends, and has served as a public member of the Wisconsin Medical Examining Board since 2023.

“I am honored to accept Governor Evers’ appointment to the Dane County Circuit Court,” said Hilton. “As the first person in my family to graduate from college, I know firsthand how dedicated mentors and access to education can shape a future in ways once unimaginable. Those people and experiences instilled in me a lifelong commitment to public service. As a judge, I will continue that mission—working to ensure the legal system is accessible, fair, and grounded in integrity. I’m grateful to my family, friends, colleagues, and mentors who’ve supported and guided me.”
