Girls on the Run Southeastern Wisconsin will Host 5K Event on Friday, May 6th
Girls on the Run of Southeastern Wisconsin will host its 5K event on Friday, May 6 at American Family Field in Milwaukee. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in 3rd to 8th grade. During the ten-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for an end-of-season celebratory 5K event.
Early packet pick-up will be on Wednesday, May 4th between 4-7 PM at DICK’S Sporting Goods at both The Corridor Brookfield and Mayfair Collection Wauwatosa locations. Day of registration will open at 4 PM and the runners/walkers will begin at 6 PM in the American Family Lot. Free parking available in the Yount Lot. Additional information:
“While we can’t shield girls from every stereotype about women or negative comment, we can tell them they are full of power and potential, teach them to think critically about the messages they receive each day, and support them as they navigate their way through adolescence and adulthood. We do all this in the program as well as teach them about how physical activity can make them feel better physically, mentally and emotionally. By having them set a goal of finishing a 5K, train for that goal and then reach the finish line, we are impacting these young girls by teaching them to believe in themselves and nobody can ever take that away from them.” Tina Jones, Executive Director, said.
About Girls on the Run
Much more than a running program, Girls on the Run inspires girls in 3rd – 8th grades to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained coaches lead small teams through a ten-week curriculum that includes dynamic discussions, activities and fun running games. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event. In Southeastern Wisconsin, more than 250 trained volunteer coaches facilitated the curriculum to 1300+ girls this season, helping equip them with the physical and emotional skills necessary to carry them over the 5K finish line at AMFAM Field.
