DPW Working To Repair Street Light Outages Caused by Recent Weather Conditions

By - Jan 30th, 2024 05:21 pm

This weekend proved particularly challenging for the City’s aged street lighting system. On Monday morning there were 121 active street lighting circuit troubles (outages) reported to Electrical Services, which is an all-time high. Department of Public Works crews repaired 20 of those outages; however, 20 more were reported Monday night. Crews were on schedule to repair about 30 outages today. This specific surge is related to the impact of warming out of our recent deep freeze and moisture from the snow melt and rain on our direct-bury street lighting cable. We have reassigned all of the Electrical Services crews that we can to work on the issue and reduce the number of outages as quickly as possible. Residents can report street lighting outages by calling (414)286-CITY (2489).

REMINDER FOR WINTER RECYCLING COLLECTION

Most recycling routes are unscheduled in the winter – meaning there is not a set schedule of collection days outside of the April through November time period. This provides staffing flexibility in the winter time when resources are shifted to snow and ice control operations as needed. Residents are able to visit Milwaukee.gov/CollectionDay to type in their address to get an estimated range of their next collection. Those with year-round set schedules continue to require carts placed at the collection point according to the schedule.  Those without a set schedule for recycling during the winter do not have to bring their carts to the curb during the winter. They only need to ensure a safe and clear path to the storage location, clear the snow from on and around the carts, and DPW will collect the carts approximately every 2-4 weeks. Residents are then to return collected carts to their storage area.
