Milwaukee— Historic Milwaukee has been approved for a $20,000 Grants for Arts Projects award to support Doors Open Milwaukee. This grant will help Historic Milwaukee continue to open doors to buildings, businesses, gardens, art galleries and more throughout Milwaukee’s downtown and neighborhoods. Historic Milwaukee’s program is among 1,248 projects across America totaling $28,840,000 that were selected to receive this first round of fiscal year 2022 funding in the Grants for Arts Projects category.

“The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support arts projects like Doors Open Milwaukee that help support the community’s creative economy,” said NEA Acting Chair Ann Eilers. “Historic Milwaukee is among the arts organizations nationwide that are using the arts as a source of strength, a path to well-being, and providing access and opportunity for people to connect and find joy through the arts.”

“Historic Milwaukee is thrilled to receive support for Doors Open for the 6th year,” said Grace Fuhr, Historic Milwaukee’s Events Director. “Doors Open teaches residents and visitors about the history and architecture of Milwaukee’s built environment, and invites us to learn about the incredible people who are working to preserve and bring new vision to these spaces. We are proud to bring the arts to this event by partnering with organizations like Artists Working in Education and Access Contemporary Music. We are also grateful to our neighborhood partners who help us bring tours to sites throughout our city.”

Doors Open is an annual city wide open house event showcasing buildings and sites throughout Metro Milwaukee, offering tours to the public for free on the fourth weekend of every September. The program pivoted in 2020 to adapt to COVID-19 and offered the program virtually. Last year’s program took place in person and online, offering opportunities to explore to everyone. The organization additionally raised awareness of Milwaukee’s neighborhoods through a series of free app tours.
