Crowley Calls for Repeal of Wisconsins Same-Sex Marriage Ban
MILWAUKEE – David Crowley, candidate for Governor of Wisconsin, today called for the repeal of Wisconsin’s 2006 constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, pledging to lead the fight as governor to ensure marriage equality remains protected in Wisconsin.
Crowley noted that while federal law would continue to require Wisconsin to recognize marriages already performed, the consequences would still be severe.
“If this Court guts marriage equality, no new licenses would be issued to same-sex couples in Wisconsin. Couples who want to get married would be forced to leave Wisconsin, travel across state lines, and then pray the paperwork holds up back home. And families who are already married would be forced into courtrooms to defend rights that should be unquestioned. That is no way to treat people—it’s cruel, and it’s wrong.”
Crowley emphasized that real change will require a new governing majority.
“To repeal this discriminatory amendment, we need Democratic majorities in both the Assembly and the Senate. Republicans have shown us who they are—they will not act to protect LGBTQ families. So if we want to move Wisconsin forward, we have to win these races and flip the Legislature.”
Crowley closed by calling on voters to join the fight: “The only way to repeal this amendment is to elect leaders who will fight for equality. That means winning the governor’s office and Democratic majorities in both houses of the Legislature. If you believe in fairness, dignity, and protecting families, then this is our moment to act. Together, we can make Wisconsin a state where equality is not up for debate.”
