MILWAUKEE (April 23, 2019) – The School of Arts & Design at Mount Mary University holds its annual celebration of creativity April 29 through May 10. Titled CREO, the name is Latin for “to make, create or produce.”

CREO: Senior Exhibitions highlight the final senior projects of 15 students in four departments: Art Therapy, Graphic Design, Interior Design and Studio Art. These exhibits will be located in the Marian Gallery and Bergstrom Hall.

  • Art Therapy – Student-designed projects combine art-making, academic research and service; all of them reflect Mount Mary’s commitment to creativity and compassion. They explore the application of art to address a wide range of topics, such as post-partum depression; peace building with children; adaptive garments and tools for people with physical challenges; dementia; art therapy with women of color; and the use of comics and graphic novels as an approach to rewriting personal narratives.
  • Graphic Design – Seniors will present their individual identities as skilled designers working with print media, web design, motion graphics and package design.
  • Interior Design – Students devoted a year to identifying issues that have been unaddressed by interior design and created projects responding to needs in these areas. Senior projects explore the creation of a sustainable boutique hotel; a live/work environment with a connection to nature; and multigenerational housing for special needs tenants.
  • Studio Art – Students with diverse artistic interests and identities come together in the Marian Gallery to exhibit their research and investigation in media exploration, form and content. This student-curated exhibit consists of two-dimensional and three-dimensional art media.

“This event is a unique opportunity for the campus and greater community to experience the distinct creative talents or our graduating seniors in the art and design disciplines,” said Barbara Armstrong, dean of the school of Arts and Design. “While each discipline is unique, they all demonstrate evidence of our programs’ focus on building agile, creative thinkers and innovative problem solvers.”

Exhibits are free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays and from 1 to 4 p.m. weekends. A welcome reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, May 2.
