Council approves extension of notice period for license holders
The Common Council today unanimously approved extending the license hearing notice period for city license holders – a move to help increase the chances that license holders will have adequate time to prepare for hearings.
A substitute ordinance sponsored by Alderwoman Milele A. Coggs for file #201617 extends the increase in the number of days that notices must be mailed by the License Division prior to licensing hearings (from 3 or 4 to 7 days) to all license or permit types, including food dealers, Class B taverns, Class D operators, home improvement contractors, public passenger vehicle permits and many others.Alderwoman Coggs, chair of the Licenses Committee, said she is grateful for the full support of her colleagues in approving the change, which should have the positive effects of fewer applicants missing hearings, as well as additional time for residents to make plans to attend or watch hearings.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic there has been a clear recognition that nothing can truly be done as ‘business as usual,’” Alderwoman Coggs said.
“We have seen many license holders have a difficult time filing applications on time, and not having adequate time to prepare for virtual license hearings. The notice period change approved today will offer more time to prepare and thus greater due process for city license holders – something that is sorely needed right now,” she said.
