Conservation Advocates Deliver Petition Signatures to Sen. Ron Johnson
Johnson Attempting to Block Clean Power Plan
MILWAUKEE, WI — Today, Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters and coalition partners urged Senator Ron Johnson to support the Clean Power Plan and delivered petition signatures and letters from constituents. Attendees also met with members of Johnson’s staff to further discuss their concerns.
The petition delivery comes as a response to Senator Johnson co-sponsoring Congressional Review Act resolutions which would permanently block the implementation of the recently finalized Clean Power Plan.
Staush Gruszynski, Political Director of Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters, said “Senator Johnson is once again wasting taxpayer dollars by sponsoring these resolutions and ignoring his constituency. A majority of Wisconsinites believe climate change stems from human sources and support the Clean Power Plan. It’s time that our state’s leaders begin to listen and put an end to desperate attempts to roll back progress on this important issue.”
“By delivering these petitions today, we are sending a clear message that we will not remain silent and will continue to fight for our clean air future. We have been out in communities across the state over the past 3 months talking to everyone from hunters and anglers, to moms who have children with asthma. However, their worries are all the same – they are concerned about the Wisconsin they will leave to the next generation.”
Additionally, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has said the state will refuse to submit a plan to EPA by next summer’s deadline. That would result in the EPA delivering a plan that the state would be forced to comply with.
Gruszynski concluded, “Governor Walker and Senator Johnson are out of step with their constituents and once again allowing Wisconsin to fall to the bottom of the Midwest. The Clean Power Plan is a commonsense approach to reduce carbon pollution, lower health risks for Wisconsin families, and create tens of thousands of sustainable, clean energy jobs, many of which would be right here in Wisconsin. These resolutions are just another attack by Senator Johnson and a shot across the bow to fair-minded Wisconsinites.”
Wisconsin League of Conservation Voters is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to electing conservation leaders, holding decision makers accountable and encouraging lawmakers to champion conservation policies that effectively protect Wisconsin’s public health and natural resources.
